Steel imports in January were 2.4 million metric tons, according to the Department of Commerce, down 23.5% versus last year or down 10.1% from December. Steel imports in January come in 8% below import licenses due to the diversion of shipments away from the U.S. into more attractive markets because of weak relative pricing here, suggests analyst Jason Bruner at Michelle Applebaum Research in suburban Chicago.
